Your internet speed is reliant on many things. Primarily of course it relies on the package you paid for, and on the speed of your modem, but at the same time it also depends on data cabling, the speed of your computers and the software you are running on your PC. While many businesses will spend time making sure the software is up to date, and that they have the best possible virus checkers etc, a lot of businesses will not understand the importance of making sure that they also have the best data cabling to allow for the transfer of lots of data.
The problem is that a high speed broadband internet connection is only as fast as the data cabling. A high bandwidth internet connection means essentially that you can transfer a lot of information at any given time and without crashing your internet. This means you can download more and larger files without incident.
However at the same time all of this data needs to 'fit through' and this means that you also need the right cables your end. Otherwise if your data cabling is not of a high enough bandwidth all of that information will still have to be 'queued' to get through the 'narrow' passage. This in turn will mean that your internet is a lot slower and that you can't make the most of the service you are paying for. A comparison here is to high definition television. To use a high def television you need to have a HD television package, or a HD DVD player (blu ray). However on its own, these won't show you a high definition image, unless you also have the right data cabling. Otherwise you will have all the high def information, but it won't be able to 'fit' through the cable to your television. The player can send the high quality information, and the television can receive and display it, but unfortunately much of the data is being lost in translation.
At the same time your internet speed also depends on your data cabling, and you again won't be able to make use of the faster packages unless your wiring is fast enough to convey the data. Again this way you'll be paying for a service you're not able to use, and your productivity will greatly suffer as a result.
This all has profound impacts on a business in fact, and if you can't use your internet at the top capacity then you can expect a lot less productivity. For instance you will take longer to send and receive messages, you will spend ages sitting in front of webpages waiting for them to load so you can read them, and you will be unable to watch videos without pausing for them to buffer every two minutes. On top of all this if you hope to use video conferencing then you need to have a fast internet connection, or it will appear jerky and pixelated and there will be a low frame rate.
